Since jaggery contains sucrose, its intake leads to an increase in blood sugar level. This means that jaggery, like any form of sugar, is harmful to diabetic people. However, people who do not have diabetes can use jaggery instead of sugar as it is a healthy choice.
Ayurveda also says that diabetes patients should not eat jaggery. Ayurveda uses jaggery to treat lung infections, sore throats, migraines and asthma, but even in this ancient method of treatment, eating jaggery is prohibited for diabetic patients.
